Be part of an inspiring community archive project by Remembering The Past, capturing a snapshot of life in North Shields in 2025. We'll interview local residents to record their stories and memories related to the town, culminating in an exhibition in the Autumn.

This exhibition and research project will delve into the town's commercial past and explore what people want from local high streets today.

Old Low Light 1225 Exhibition

Seafit health event with mobile dentist for fishing community
Health awareness event with local health providers and mobile dentist (Dentaid) for the fishing community.

Blue Light Choir in Concert
At the end of a week of activities for North Shields 800 associated with the fishing industry and the work of The Fishermen’s Mission, come and be entertained by the Blue Light Choir, made up of all the emergency services, NHS and key workers.

A Splash of Colour
A Splash of Colour is an exhibition of artwork from children and young people from North Tyneside Learning Trust Partner Schools. This year the theme is “light”.
Bio Blitz Event
The museum is working alongside the Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN) and Environment Record Information Centre to hold a bio-blitz event.

Miniature Railway Grand Opening
Experience the excitement of a brand-new 7 ¼" miniature railway, connecting the museum to ‘Engine House Halt’.

Reflections of the Journey

Picnic in the Park
Back for its third consecutive year, Picnic in the Park 2025 combines live music, good food, children's activities and more for the whole community, all to support the work of YMCA North Tyneside. This year will feature a children’s fun run around Northumberland Square.

Parade of Boats and Blessing of the Fleet
School children parading with pipers, gathering at The Herring Girl on the Western Quay singing local songs. Joined by a flotilla of fishing and private vessels on the river and a blessing of the fleet.

North Shields 800 Community Day
Free day for local people to explore and celebrate the history, heritage and culture of North Shields, including talks, live music, demonstrations and displays. Opportunity to promote the spirit of volunteering, as most of the organisations involved depend on volunteers. Something for all the family.

The Living River
Exciting plans in progress
A unique and immersive view of the town’s history through the lens of the River Tyne. This short video will focus on the river’s perspective of North Shields, offering a fresh and engaging narrative that highlights the integral role the river has played in shaping the town’s identity and development.

Mouth of the Tyne Festival
Celebrating 20 years of the festival in 2025, with evening concerts and a daytime concert on the Sunday. Free street entertainment throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Family Fun Day
Active North Tyneside is hosting annual Family Fun Days in parks across the borough once again this summer. It’s a great fun and free day out with the kids.

An initiative to encourage as many residents of North Shields as possible to read the same book by a local author at the same time.

A 10k Road race from the Parks Sports Centre to St Mary’s Lighthouse, welcoming more than 2,000 runners.

North Shields Culture Ambassadors
Join Helix Arts and the North Tyneside Local Education Partnership to celebrate the incredible artworks created by North Shields young people marking 800 years of North Shields.

Plunge Immersive
From the BAFTA-longlisted and award-winning creators of PLUNGE comes PLUNGE Immersive—an extraordinary underwater animated VR experience inspired by the true story of Katie, a North East woman on a healing journey through sea swimming.

Deeds, Words and Danger
Deeds, Words & Danger is a theatre heritage project inspired by suffragette Norah Balls, empowering women and girls in North Shields through drama and storytelling. Led by Workie Ticket Theatre.

North Shields Christmas Market
North Shields Christmas Market will see over 70 stalls, street food vendors, festive bars and Christmas carols sung by local school choirs.

Pop-Up Family Pride at North Shields Library
North Shields Library will be hosting Curious Arts’ Pop-Up Family Pride, a day of fun-packed free creative activities for all the family.

The 60th anniversary of Stan Laurel's death
A gathering of Laurel and Hardy aficionados hosted by the local chapter, the Beau Chumps tent, to celebrate the life of Stan Laurel, chat, share stories and take pictures on a special and poignant day.

Heritage Train Rides
Enjoy a four mile return trip following the route of the coal trains from the collieries, to the River Tyne, whilst travelling in a 1950s passenger carriage.

Bio Blitz Event
The museum is working alongside the Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN) and Environment Record Information Centre to hold a bio-blitz event. At this event, families can get involved in finding and recording as many species of plants, animals and fungi that live on our site. We will also be offering a planting activity for families to get involved in.

Hector Gannet - second date added
After tickets sold out in 5 minutes for their show on Friday 31 January, Hector Gannet has added a second night on Saturday 1 February.

50th birthday of North Shields Library
