Exciting plans in progress
Explore the history of railways around North Shields and how they helped connect the area to the rest of the country and the world. A look into the pioneering developments that lead the way in urban railway development and how you can see these things today.
Tyneside is considered to be the cradle of the railways, with pioneering inventors and innovators putting their new ideas to good use around the area. This project will capture some key elements of the rich railway history of North Shields and explore why it has made such a significant impact to our social, economic and industrial history. Bringing together research and objects from within the North Tyneside Steam Railway collection as well as a visiting locomotive to help tell the story. A range of talks and events around the running season will pick upon specific aspects of the broad history, while a more permanent exhibition using information boards and smaller objects will be housed within the museum and the grounds.
