 Exciting plans in progress

Discover the fascinating history of shopping in North Shields and celebrate today's thriving independent businesses through an exciting collaboration between Remembering The Past and Northumbria University. This exhibition and research project will delve into the town's commercial past and explore what people want from local high streets today.

When was the heyday of shopping in North Shields and what were your favourite shops?

Using archive collections and Remembering The Past’s ‘Gannin Shopping in Shields’ exhibition as a starting point, researchers from Northumbria University will enable a comparison between shopping then and now, interview local businesses and inspire a conversation about what people want from their local high street.  Can the sense of community associated with shopping in the past still be found in the current day?

Remembering the Past is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to collecting and managing a digital archive of sound recordings and images that reflect every aspect of local life in North Tyneside since the early 1900s. We began in 1997 and have built one of the longest-running and most diverse community history archives in the country. By sharing memories and history with diverse generations and groups, we aim to contribute to stronger, more connected communities in and around North Tyneside.

If you are interested in volunteering on the project, or have a story to share about your life in North Shields, please get in touch!
